Cladding Vs. Tiles

Well, everything from yesterday is now sorted, so I think, and today has been a bit more positive!

Amongst the drama of yesterday, the cladding samples arrived at our local chandlery. Oh dear! I can see they'd be OK in certain environments:

1. Public toilet
2. Nightclub, or;
3. Nursing home(!)

but they're definitely not right for in here:

It's not the colours so much, or even the patterns, but my main concern is that when installed on the wall, they'll be no "grout" lines like with tiles or any sort of tongue and groove effect to break up each panel. So basically, it will look like one big mass of whatever design we'd have on the wall and I think that could look a bit cheap.

You can get chrome inserts for between each panel, but again, I think this could look cheap and a bit "early 90s"!?

There was one particular sample that we liked from them all, which was from a different range:

With flash:

Without:

It's called "Woodland Beige" and has a subtle "shimmer":

It's a high gloss finish with gold sparkly bits in. It'd be fine if we were just having, say, a shower cubicle done in it, but to have the whole of the bathroom finished with it - it just wouldn't be right.

It would look like part of the set from Cleopatra and I'd be expecting Liz Taylor to be sitting in my bath every time I walked into the bathroom :D

So, we think we'll be going back to the tiling idea. We both chatted and also agreed that to go with the cladding rather than the tiles would feel like we're compromising what we really want done.

The first 12 months on this boat were spent having jobs done in half measures, which has resulted in a lot of expense since to put it all right, so we don't want to go down that route again.

I'm going to call our boat fit out guy this week and talk about when he could do the job, payment etc and see if we can work something out.

  1. Hi Lewis, We have a fully tiled bathroom in our boat and its not a problem, it does look better in our opinion. Have what you want and you will be much happier with the result!

  2. Hi guys thanks for the tip. Think we will go for tiles. Had a sneak peak on the MGM site at your boat and those tiles are similar to what we have in mind and it does look good ;)

So think that's the route we will be going down. We will post plenty of pictures as we have the work done :)

    Hope you're both well?

  3. Just finished tiling our shower room and it looks great. We replaced what could only be described as 'lino on the walls'. Nasty! :)

  4. Hi Neil thanks for your comment. Shame I can't read your blog. It won't let me access it? Hope you're well though!

  5. I think it depends on exactly what you're covering. I've seen plenty of boats with laminate linings for the shower (wet walls, angel board etc) and they look really nice. If you want to do the whole room, then it's probably a bit too much. Why not see if you can have a look at some boats with laminate fitted? It's likely that whatever boats Braidbar are fitting out at the moment has it, and I'm sure that if you asked Peter or Susan to have a look they'd be glad to show you.

  6. Hi Both
We've a fully tiled shower and part tiled walls around the hand basin, and in over 6 years (and some none too gentle bumps!) they are still there. I don't know what they're stuck on with, though.

  7. Hi Adam - good idea although like you say it's not gonna look good all over which we plan on doing basically in replace of our existing cladding, so think we will stick with tiles. Might pop down to braidbar anyway though just to see - cheers for the Tip!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Geoff and mags!

  8. I think the key is you have to basically glue the tiles on, rather than using traditional tile adhesive - that's when I imagine they would come loose. We just used cheap interior adhesive (No Nails type stuff) and I don't think they'll be coming off in a hurry! :-) (p.s. Started a blog a while ago, but then decided against it so disabled what I had - might start it again one day when I have anything to write that I think folk would be even vaguely interested in reading!!) Love your blog though, you make me chuckle - the "thing on the bathroom floor" was a classic! :-)

  9. Hi Neil

Cheers for your comment , I'll suggest it to the fitter that's coming to do it! Really glad you're enjoying the blog and yes it is funny now that I was locked out the bathroom but not at the time!

Shame that you don't have a blog any more! We are naturally nosey and don't know anything about you!!! Grrrr

  10. Haha, I'm on the Canalworld forums too (a bit, too many arrogant old men on there for me though) - I'll say hi when I spot you posting next :-)
