Good for Boating?

We went into the local town the other day as our old DAB radio gave up the ghost and we missed Jazz FM ;) There's an independent electrical store down there which is a bit more expensive than getting it from somewhere like Currys or even online, but I'm fed up of ordering online and having problems with delivery and waiting etc.

Getting it from a shop is much easier - you can look at it, and get it there and then! I think shopping in store is going to make a comeback!

Not really sure why DAB radios are so expensive, but they all are so we thought we'd get the most appropriate one we could for our boating lifestyle.

We found a radio from a brand called Roberts which came with rechargeable batteries which charge when you plug it into mains and also has a built in solar panel - meaning that the radio can function just on solar alone and the panel will also charge the rechargeable batteries in good conditions. Sounds great although I don't suppose the solar panel will be much cop until the spring/ summer arrives.

It'll be great though when were out and about cruising in the warmer months. We'll be able to have it out on the deck with us ;)

It's got a good stereo sound to it and good bass so it will do for us!

Here's to wishing everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR! I'm not a fan of it myself, and will be in bed probably long before 12! P is at work but he's off tomorrow and we've decided to actually venture out somewhere new, away from the mooring. We're not going far, maybe just down Derbyshire way but it'll give us a change of scenery as we've been here at the mooring since August time.
We will top up with water before we go, and we got coal and diesel today. I later went to Waitrose to stock up on food which should last a good week or so.

I'm looking forward to it :)

    Thanks for the comment guys. We will definately be passing you sometime this year, although we plan to do the K&A then the Thames into London before heading North. Do you plan to travel far this year? We will probably set off late March for 7 months hopefully all being well. Keep in touch..

Where Can I Begin?

It's been nearly 9 months since I last blogged and I can't actually believe it's been that long - feels like it was just a few weeks ago really. At this stage then, I'm not sure if there'll be any readers out there, but I suppose if I want to carry on chronicling life on the boat, I need to make a start somewhere! I think the reason for the lack of blogging is, in part, because I was boring myself (never mind anyone else that reads it!) and it was starting to feel a bit too personal. I seemed to be detailing my life over the internet for anyone to read and I suppose in some ways, I was starting to get a little uncomfortable with that. However, that's what blogging is, I know! Make use of time, let not advantage slip - William Shakespeare

Even on Boxing Day we manage to find time to do some "boaty" jobs! We basically finished off the wiring-in of the new small inverter that we've fitted on a 12v cigarette socket directly to the batteries for the TV and aerial. We still had the thick cable hanging down the wall to the sockets which looked a bit of an eyesore and I couldn't bear it any more! It all looks neat and tidy now and we've really noticed an improvement with the battery capacity. With everything we usually have on, using the main inverter was taking around 10-13% out of the batteries an hour, which was way too much! With this new inverter we are only using around 3 or 4% an hour which means a lot less engine running time ! It's fantastic. I think this also shows that it WAS the main inverter that was using the battery capacity and the batteries aren't knackered after all! So if there's any people out there who are planning on getting a new inverter or are fitting a boat out etc, D
